Luther Series 4 review

John Luther is back! The grizzled tortured detective returns for a two episode arc of the BBC crime drama Luther. For those who may not know the show John Luther is a police Detective who lives a troubled existence.  While his means may be unconventional (sometimes illegal) he will stop at nothing to catch the culprit. This is not a show were you will see non stop action and fight scenes. Luther is more of a gritty Sherlock Holmes than a clean cut James Bond. He is a tortured and tragic figure who can’t find happiness because everyone he cares for is killed (usually due to him).

The episode starts with Luther getting a visit from the police informing him that someone  he cared for was killed. This springs him back to actions not only looking for answers but also hunting down a sadistic killer.  Added to this series cast is Rose Leslie (Ygritte from Game of Thrones) as DS Emma Lane. She is excellent in her role but there wasn’t enough screen time for her character. The episodes juggled a lot of plotlines and for the most part it works, but it also seems like they took on too more for a 2 episode season. Especially since it deals with a major character’s death, it maybe should have been fleshed out more.

Another issue is that this is not a good start off point in the series for anyone who has never seen Luther before. For longtime fans it’s great to see past past characters retune but they don’t really explain the relationship John has with the characters or why new fans should care. There is also the issue with the episode ending on a cliffhanger. This would be ok if we where for certain that the show was coming back but there is no definitive answer for that. Overall a great episode for Luther fans and a ok episode for newcomers.

Score 7.5 out of 10
